The Environment

English growers, together with those in many other countries, recognise the importance of avoiding damage to the environment, minimising the use of energy, avoiding wastage, recycling and encouraging biodiversity whilst producing high quality fruit efficiently. Nearly all growers in England are members of assurance schemes, which require them to keep detailed records of all plant protection products used, with justifications for their use. They also have to maintain detailed records of the servicing of machinery and equipment together with the disposal of waste. Independent audits are undertaken and growers who fail to meet the necessary standards are delisted as suppliers. Similar systems apply to packhouses operators and those who store fruit.

Environmental measures taken by growers, packers and those who store fruit include:

  1. Planting the headlands of orchards with plants and shrubs to attract beneficial insects to maximise pollination and reduce pests.
  2. Providing refuges on trees in orchards for beneficial insects.
  3. Providing nesting boxes for birds.
  4. Using pheromone traps to attract and control pests.
  5. Using mulches to control weeds.
  6. Minimising fungal infections by removing fallen fruit and macerating leaves in the autumn.
  7. Collecting rainwater for storage in on-farm reservoirs for irrigation.
  8. Recycling water used in packhouses by filtering and purifying with UV.
  9. Producing electricity for packhouses and cold stores through solar panels.
  10. Insulating cold stores and packhouses to minimise energy usage in combination with computerised controls to maximise efficiencies.
  11. Collecting waste cardboard and paper for recycling.
  12. Utilising the entire production of apples and pears by selling those fruits that are unsuitable for the fresh market for processing or juice and composting rotten fruit.
