Smaller, brighter, sweeter but LATE - 2013 English apple crop is back in the shops - State of the art technology transforming
Picking of the major mid-season English apples such as Gala, Cox and Egremont Russet has almost been completed and despite lower yields due to the weather, there will be sufficient English apples in the shops to meet demand in full until at least the end of this year. Eating quality is very good with excellent taste, high levels of juice and crunchy texture. Sugar levels are above average which is surprising in view of the relative lack of sunshine this summer and due probably to the late season which has allowed more time for sugars to develop.
However, there will be more weather marking than usual on the skin of English apples resulting in some discolouration and smooth russet (small areas of light browning). This marking does not affect taste and so the industry has launched a "Still Tastes Great" Campaign to reassure shoppers. The logo is as shown and it is hoped that retailers will display the logo alongside English apples.
